Hangzhou is the capital of China's animation industry, and MVDRV's innovative museum is a true homage and tribute to the rising relevance and popularity to the animation and comic industry.





MVRDV focuses on achieving excellent energy ratings, and the CAM Museum is no different. The sleek aerodynamic design creates even wind pressure, and a lower need for air conditioning. The interior is cooled mainly with natural ventilation and adiabatic cooling. The eight balloons are interconnected, and their circular shape helps air ventilation and flow, keeping visitors cool and fresh.

In recent years, comics and animation have made the jump from childrens entertainment to an adult following and fine art. MVRDV's speech balloon design is both playful and sophisticated, a representation of this balance. The entire façade is embossed with cartoon renderings that represent a Chinese vase. The speech balloons can even become literal, as text can be projected on the outside.

Each of the balloons house different exciting sections of the museum. One holds the lobby, library, three cinemas and the education center. The permanent collection is displayed in one segment, spiraling chronologically around the oval balloon. An interactive section allows visitors to test out blue screens, stop motion animation and other animation techniques. Perhaps the most alluring section is the 3D zoetrope, in which visitors can interact with holographic projections and games.

09-05-2011 - Het Stedelijk Planbureau van Hangzhou heeft MVRDV als winnaar aangewezen van de internationale ontwerpwedstrijd voor het China Comic and Animation Museum (CCAM) in Hangzhou, China.

Het ontwerp van MVRDV refereert naar tekstballonnen uit stripverhalen. Een serie van acht als tekstballonnen gevormde volumes vormen het interieur van het museumcomplex van in totaal 30.000 m². Onderdeel van dit project zijn ook een nieuw op eilanden gelegen park, een openbaar plein en een Expo centrum van 13.000 m².

De 30.000 m² zijn verdeeld over acht volumes die onderling met elkaar verbonden zijn. Hierdoor is een rondgang langs het hele programma mogelijk. Serviceruimtes, zoals de lobby, onderwijsruimtes, drie theaterzalen met in totaal 1.111 stoelen en een stripboekenbibliotheek bevinden zich ieder in hun eigen ballon. Als twee ballonnen elkaar raken zorgen grote openingen voor een doorgang en zichtlijnen tussen de volumes.

Het grootste deel van het terrein van 13,7 hectare is vrijgehouden voor een nieuw park op een serie eilanden in White Horse Lake. Met behulp van rietbedden wordt hiervan de waterkwaliteit verbeterd, boottochten door dit eilandenlabyrint zijn een toegevoegde attractie. Een losstaand Expo gebouw van 13.000 m² kan gebruikt worden door grote beurzen en het jaarlijkse China International Cartoon and Animation Festival (CICAF). Het grootste strip -en animatie-evenement van China dat sinds 2005 wordt gehouden in Hangzhou. Het openbare plein tussen de Expo en het CCAM zal het centrum van het festival vormen. Het museum is het nieuwe centrale punt op de minder dichtbevolkte zuidoever van de Qiantang rivier en attractie van het nieuwe Strip -en Animatiecentrum waarvan de eerste fase bijna is afgerond. In een serie van heuvelvormige gebouwen bevinden zich kantoren, een hotel en een conferentiecentrum.

MVRDV won de prijsvraag van EMBT, Atelier Bow Wow, Tongji Institute of Architectural Design en Tsinghua Architectural Design. Het MVRDV team bestaat uit Kossman.deJong tentoonstellingsarchitecten, lokale architect Zhubo Architectural & Engineering Design, Arup Engineers en JongeMeesters grafische vormgevers. De bouw van het 92 miljoen euro kostende project start in 2012.
