Mobile instant messaging and VoIP company Nimbuzz is looking to shift its global headquarters to India, which according to the company, accounts for 20% of its 90 million user base, reports The Economic Times. Nimbuzz has announced the restructuring of its top management. Vikas Saxena who was previously the General Manager at Aircel and the country head of Nimbuzz, has been appointed as the CEO of Nimbuzz. He takes over from Nimbuzzs co-founder and CEO Evert Jaap Lugt, who has been appointed as the executive chairman of the board. That being said, the LinkedIn profile of Vikas Saxena and Evert Jaap Lugt suggests that they were appointed to these positions 9 months and 5 months ago respectively.

India is fast becoming a hot market for messaging apps that use data as a carrier: along with Nimbuzz, there is Whatsapp, RockeTalk, ebuddy, im+, Viber and kik, among others.

Last week, Nimbuzz had opened up its Messenger API and launched a new initiative called Chat Buddy Developer Program. Through this initiative, the company enabled brands, publishers and indie developers to build chat bots which offers updates across various categories like cricket, astrology, shopping, games, and news and allow users to find information across various categories like ticketing, movie reviews, classifieds and so on. Nimbuzz had claimed that through this program, developers can access up to 90 million Nimbuzz users across 220+ countries who spend an average 55 minutes every day. It was also indicated that Nimbuzz plans to introduce its own gateway and payment service through which developers will be able to offer in-app purchases in a revenue sharing arrangement with Nimbuzz

In April 2012, Nimbuzz had started offering location based advertising on mobile phones in India through its app. The company had claimed that it serves advertisements to users based on their surroundings, lifestyle and personal data collected while registering for a Nimbuzz profile, although it had clarified that location sharing is entirely an opt-in process for the users.

In November 2011, the company had ventured into e-commerce by launching Ncarry.com which retails mobile handsets. In conversation with Medianama, Keshav Bajaj, VP-Business Development at Nimbuzz had informed that the move is inline with the companys efforts to develop a recommendation engine, which would encourage users to upgrade their existing handset after a specific time period as well as help the company in monetizing its operations.

Nimbuzz IM application is currently available across all major mobile platforms such as Android, iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry, J2ME, as well as on the Web and Windows and Mac desktop computers. The company claims to have partnerships with almost all the local and international OEMs and its IM apps comes pre-installed in more than 210 different handsets in India.


Voordat hij Nimbuzz oprichtte, was hij via meerdere succesvolle startups actief op het terrein van internet en mobiele communicatie. In een video-interview met Ronnie Overgoor geeft hij onder meer zijn visie op de business- en advertentiemodellen van mobiel.


Nimbuzz is een bedrijf dat het mogelijk maakt om gratis te communiceren op je mobiele telefoon. Dus bijvoorbeeld gratis bellen, gratis chatten en gratis MSN-en. Het is een IP-based oplossing. Nimbuzz is sinds 2006 actief en draait dit jaar voor het eerst een miljoen euro omzet. Men is nog niet winstgevend, maar het businessmodel is goed omdat men ook echt waarde weet te brengen.

Bij mobiel doet het concept massa=kassa opgeld. Kijk naar Facebook, dat heeft in de eerste jaren de opdracht gekregen om totaal niet naar businessmodel of revenue te kijken, het ging alleen maar om marktbereik. Nu hebben ze zo'n bereik dat het eenvoudig is om te converteren.

Ronnie Overgoor (Blue Shots TV) geeft aan dat er al zoveel mobiele apps zijn, hoe val je dan nog op? Volgens Lugt moet je het virale aspect daarbij goed benutten. Denk daarbij vanuit de waardepropositie, waarom zouden mensen uberhaupt je app gaan gebruiken en wat is je boodschap voor de markt. V.w.b. de advertentiemodellen denkt Lugt dat het app based, consument gedreven en location based zal zijn. Het MWG zou wat hem bereft hierin ook een actievere rol kunnen vervullen.
