Network development and design with the MOVE Meter

Austin officials gave the firm (MOVE Mobility) transportation planning data from its Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and they now have a tool by which to analyze how bicycle infrastructure can affect the transportation system as a whole. The introduction to the tool allowed us to see one way and one tool Dutch cities use to make transportation decisions related to bicycles."

Network development and design with the MOVE Meter
It is a web based tool that:
-shows the bicycle potential of your city
-demonstrates the impact of cycling on congestion
-let you play with different scenarios
-is easy to use by all planners
-presents results quickly (< 10 minutes per scenario)

The MOVE Meter facilitated this process

The MOVE Meter results are based on your traffic data.

Where is my network congested?

Who is using my network?

High percentage of short trips in the Centre

where to invest in cycling?

What is the potential impact of cycling?

V/C ratio after replacing proportion of short trips

Zoom in to get more detail

Basic functions of the MOVE Meter

Difference with other transport modeling tools

Web based (you can use any PC/laptop anywhere);
Easy to use (no need to know Transport Planning Software);
Quick scenario analyses;
Based on data from your own Transportation Model;
Scenario analyses ready after 10-15 minutes.

Why is the MOVE meter so fast?

1.The MOVE Meter works with less zones. It aggregates data from zones that are further away from the area you have pointed out as focus area.
2.The MOVE meter focuses on the issues addressed. So when you want to assign an OD-matrix to get an idea of the effects on V/C ratios, the MOVE Meter assigns the OD matrix without calculating new speeds or changes in modal split.

Which data is necessary to get started?

Network development and design with the MOVE Meter
Standard Transportation Module
1. Network description with coordinates and attributes of links and nodes:
-free-flow speed (number of lanes/capacity).
2. Coordinates of centroids of zones/neighbourhoods;
3. Socio-economic data of these zones (e.g. population, numbers of employers). If additional data is available more detailed scenarios can be explored:
1. OD matrices (number of trips between zones) for cars (peak hour, all day)
2. Traffic flows on each link (peak hour/all day) in each direction (cars, freight, bicycles (if calculated or counted))
3. Actual speeds on the links (either measured or calculated)
4. OD matrices per mode (car, public transport) In order to transfer the data to GIS, shapes-files are preferred for geographic information and excel or ASCII for other data.

WHAT WE DO

Move to meet
If we want to fulfil the expectations that people have for mobility in our ever-growing cities, we need to change. The future will challenge our concept of mobility. We need to adjust our approach, adopt new ideas and adapt to the new demands and limitations. If we want our cities to become better places to live, we have to act now. MOVE Mobility connects people, networks and partners with a single goal: Smart Moving Cities.

We are an intermediary and broker between partners and clients (or potential clients). We contribute ideas for projects and coalitions and we ensure that projects take shape. We do this by proactively responding to tenders (both national and international) and by defining our projects in close collaboration with our partners.

In all these activities, Goudappel Coffeng is our preferred supplier. In our approach to the market, we also involve other partners i.e. Omnitrans International, Saxion University, Imtech and the Van den Berggroep within our network.

MARCEL VAN LIESHOUT

What motivates me is not just implementing projects with clients but rather collaborating with clients to define projects that contribute to a mobile and liveable society. By learning from one another and utilising one another's experience, enthusiasm and motivation, we can create surprising solutions and also define and implement less straightforward projects. That's how I, ve worked for consulting and engineering firms (Goudappel Coffeng and Witteveen + Bos) and for the traffic department of my home town, Rotterdam.

I studied traffic engineering at the Traffic Academy in Tilburg and social geography at Utrecht University. Before switching to MOVE Mobility, I worked for Goudappel Coffeng (2005-2012), where I was in charge of the Hague branch of the Transport Architecture Division and a senior consultant, with sustainable mobility as a special area of interest.
